Slender Concrete Curtain

This project was funded by a Creative Activity Research grant from Washington University in St. Louis. The overall goal is to advance investigations of concrete as a thin surface. Concrete Curtain uses fabric as formwork and sprayed concrete reinforced with a fiberglass scrim (GFRC) as a way to reduce the overall thickness of the piece while maintaining high compressive properties and gaining considerable flexural strength. This investigation pushes the material to its limits by creating a very thin layer of concrete, only ¼ inch. The outcomes of this research serves to evaluate the possible utilization of concrete in a variety of applications in particular for building envelopes and concrete furniture.
